Yesterday my car's locks were frozen solid and I couldn't get in my car to go to work. So I came back in the house and my brother was under his down comforter that he has named Robert Downey Jr, and he said I could take his car. Off to work I go in his car which is a big upgrade from my car. Vroom vroom, went the Emily in Andrew's Audi.
Work was pretty good and the lemon cake I made was decimated by the office. I then went after work to a friend's house to pick up a computer she was giving to another friend so he could give it to his kids for Christmas. I volunteered to fix whatever was wrong with it so Tony could give his kids a good Christmas.
Upon leaving Laurel's, I went to the gym and then came home after running an errand for my brother. Upon returning home, the house was very clean! Andrew had cleaned the house on his day off and I was freakin' amazed. I went into my room and I was bombarded with crap.
Now to the subject of this entry. Do you remember when you were little and you had so much crap in your room that you had a path from the bed to the door and to your toy of choice and that was it? Well, that's the current state of my room. I can either sit in my chair or lay on my bed, but I have to move the contents from one to the other. Anything and everything of mine that was in the living room is now in my bedroom. So why was it in the living room in the first place? Because I have a lot of large things in a small room. I have a queen size bed, a 27 inch tv, a computer desk, and an enormous dresser along with a dog bed and a fan that stands on the floor. It appears that my next project will be to clean up my room a bit since I've tried working on this computer, but it's just not doing anything. Laurel said all it needed was a new harddrive but I put one in and I get nothing. It comes on but I get no beeps and my monitor never kicks on. I unplugged all drives and nothing registered. My best guess is that the onboard video card is fried, but I'm not sure.
Oh well, onto the room slaying. If anyone has any thoughts on the computer, please comment. |

So I went to this dessert theater with Tonya at a local Baptist Church. For those of you that know me and know me well, I'm not a Baptist. I'm a Christian, but my faith is a little different from others because I don't believe in organized religion. I believe I can worship at my own pace and I don't need anyone telling me how to do so.
With that said, this evening was absolutely lovely. I really had such a good evening with the music and the atmosphere at the church. But, this entry is not about my beliefs at all, unless you count my belief in family. I am from West Virginia and I will ALWAYS be a girl from WV. I moved to Columbia back in May to provide myself a better future. I love WV and miss it oh so much.
When the orchestra was playing tonight, they had a little slideshow of pictures from snowy areas with hills. Of course, this made me think of home. So like the baby I am, I had tears rolling out of my eyes because WV will always be home and this is the first year that I'm not there at this time of the year. Don't get me wrong, I'm not alone down here because I have my brother and my friends from work, but I miss my Mom and Nanny so much! I called Nanny on my way back to the house tonight and I was choking back tears because I didn't want her to feel sad, but she would have absolutely loved it!

Last night was my company's Christmas party as well as the night I went to see the Chronicles of Narnia. The party was pretty good. It wasn't as stuffy as I had expected. I took a friend from work, Tonya, with me to keep me company in the face of all the crazies there. I didn't want to be the only one there without a date since Jared's not here at the moment. They had an open bar and some people were hitting it hard. I just had one rum and coke to drink and that was it. Also, Tonya drove so that I could have a drink. I know, I'm just so stuffy and responsible sometimes. The party was downtown in this beautiful old building at the Chamber of Commerce. I only knew a few people there, my representative being one of them, and a few other members of the staff from Systemtec. For those of you that are confused, I work for BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina through a contract company, which would be Systemtec. I've been working there for 6 months and apparently my contract is getting renewed for another 6 months.
One of the people from Systemtec was a little sloshed. I do believe she said at some point, "You were my first Emily! I guess that sounds kind of wrong, but I don't care!" My thought is that they have the booze there just so people loosen up a bit. Tonya's a full time employee of BlueCross and she's going to try and get us some tickets to the Myrtle Beach party because they get crazy drunk there, and I find it amusing sometimes to watch the stupid shit people do when they get too much booze in them.
The party didn't have any door prizes or anything, but they did have a little box of chocolates for each of us to take home with us. It turns out it was freakin' Godiva chocolate. I haven't opened mine, but I'm sure it's good stuff.
After we left the party, we met up with a bunch of Tonya's friends from her Sunday School class to see The Chronicles of Narnia. It was really good! I haven't read the books in years, but now I'm feeling like I want to again. I just loved the books as a child. The visuals in that movie were just stunning. We were listening to a radio program on the way to the movie and they said that people should try and figure out which animals are real in the movie and which ones aren't. I could tell in most cases, but that could be because I was trying hard to figure it out.
Tonight I'm going with Tonya to a Christmas play at a friend's church. That should be fun. But, I need to shower first. |

Billboards greet drivers with a sample of Oakmont tradition
There is a crazy little squirrel greeting drivers as they cross the Hulton Bridge to enter Oakmont.
While he's not exactly one of the crazy little squirrels who force drivers to stop suddenly throughout the borough, he will soon hold the same warm spot in residents' hearts.
Oakmont Chamber of Commerce has launched a new campaign to boost tourism and encourage more people to come to town to shop and the squirrel is going to help. He's on a billboard near the Hulton Bridge beckoning drivers to veer their cars to Oakmont's business district.
Okay, I'm sorry - but what about this squirrel is going to make me shop in some town in Pennsylvania? I lived below Pennsylvania for twenty-two years of my life and I was in the state maybe a total of two times. Please note that this was my choice so my car would not fall into one of their potholes that would easily be mistaken for the great divide.
Inquiring minds want to know what this squirrel is doing with a fork anyway? Is he going to stab people that don't go shopping? How's he going to stab them without opposoble thumbs? I see this as a problem for the furry little bastard. Or, is he a cannibal/kleptomaniac squirrel hell-bent on eating his furry comrade and stealing the contents of his squirrel-sized shopping bag? Speaking of which, would I really want to buy tiny gifts that fit in squirrel-sized shopping bags?
Oh! How did the squirrel pay for it? Did he steal it, or can I take an enormous bag of nuts and buy a pair of new shoes? I could really use some new tennis shoes...
If they want people to visit to shop, fix the damn roads; don't pimp out our furry little woodland creatures.

I weep for the victims of Katrina. I especially weep for ![[info]](http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif) selphish. I need to figure out exactly what I want to do to help in the relief effort. BlueCross BlueShield of SC is offering $2 for every $1 we donate to the American Red Cross. My brother is going to donate $100 so the Red Cross will get $300. I am going to help in any way I can, but I might be able to find a more direct method of helping.
My city, Columbia, has opened its arms to many evacuees from the hurricane. However, there's a possibility Hurricane Ophelia will smack into the coast of South Carolina next week. However, this will seem like nothing more than a thunderstorm to the people that went through Katrina. It may not even make landfall before it dissipates.
I am fairly certain I am going to buy thisshirt for $10 so $20 gets donated to the cause.
In other and more personal news (if anyone actually still reads this) I was bitten by a spider about two days ago. I wasn't aware of it until roughly 8 hours after it happened, and then I just thought it was a bug bite. However, now it has become apparent that it poisoned me and caused my foot to swell up to twice its size and develop of fever of its own. It throbs, it's red, and it hurts like hell. I can't wear a shoe on my right foot because
A) I can't get one on.
B) It hurts like hell if I do.
I went to the doctor and she hooked me up with some drugs and says it's most likely a spider bite and that I should monitor it closely. She also says I am not to return to work until Monday. Today I stayed home in bed playing Tales of Symphonia with Jared. The swelling has gone down, but it still hurts to walk on it and it itches like crazy.
Bleh.

Sorry bobthemilkman but parts of your state definitely suck. I left yesterday morning at 8:45 EST to drive to Arkansas to see Jared. I got here at 8:45 central and I was really tired. Everything was going great until I got stuck in construction for almost an hour outside of Birmingham, Alabama. Then I ended up on this lovely road called US 78. Apparently, it's going to be Interstate 22 in the future so parts of it were really nice and other parts took me through scenic areas like the Bama Dragway and Catfish Junction. I am not kidding, I passed a place called Catfish Junction. It looked like some kind of place to eat, but I'm just not too sure about that.
Mississippi was great and I was on more of future Interstate 22. Then as soon as I hit Memphis, I was stuck in traffic again. Thanks to my little jaunt through Alabama, I went through Memphis at 5:00 PM. Crossing the Mississippi into Arkansas was really neat, I never realized how big that bridge was, or I just don't get out much.
I'm going to start heading back to South Carolina on Saturday because I'm highly paranoid and I want to make sure that I'm back in Columbia and well-rested for my first day of work on Monday. Jared looked a little sad when I told him this morning that I'd be leaving on Saturday, but hopefully we'll see each other again in two weeks.
I've been semi-productive today by working on some fansubbing stuff that has been begging for my attention for far too long now. I really want to feed my Empire Earth II addiction, but I forgot to ask him this morning if I could install it on his PC and I'd prefer not to play it on my laptop without a mouse. I need a little wireless mouse for my lappy. |

I might embark on an 11 hour trip tomorrow and drive to Arkansas to see Jared/astridas. Told Mom about it, and while she wasn't too keen on the idea, she said I'm an adult and I can make my own decisions. I felt like I should tell her so she would know where I was. I just don't like keeping things from her and the car is still technically hers. She hasn't driven it in a few years, but she owns it and it is registered to her and the insurance is in her name as well. However, she informed me that I can always take that car wherever I want.
Didn't sleep much last night. I think that has a lot to do with nerves since if I go tomorrow, it will be my longest trip yet. Also, I've got to drive back to Columbia, SC today seeing as I came home for the weekend to see Mom and Nanny and to get out of my brother's house since he was going to be gone all weekend. Some might say I'm crazy for leaving when he wouldn't be there, but it gets a little lonely during the day when I'm there all day long and he's the only person in the greater Columbia area that I do know.
I haven't seen Jared since the end of April and I'm really excited about seeing him again.

After many months of searching, I finally got a job! Last Thursday I had an interview with Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina. I'm actually being represented by an IT staffing company called Systemtec. My interview went well, but I didn't feel like I got the job when I left the office. I called my agent when I got home and told her how things went and stuff like that. My interview was at 1:30 and at 3:45, she called me to inform me that I didn't get the specific job I interviewed for because they selected someone else, but they opened a position identical to that one just for ME and they want me to start on the 20th of June! I'm going to be a systems tester and I don't know what all that entails, but hey! I got a freakin' job! Unfortunately, I'm only guaranteed for 6 months, but it is quite possible they will hire me after my contract is up because they created the position just for me and they will have to train me.
This is one excited Emily speaking.
Tomorrow I go to sign my contract and go over my benefits package. YAY! |

I've been busy moving down to my brother's house in South Carolina and I've also been busy looking for a job. It's going, but I really hope I find a job soon. I'm being stubborn and I don't want to settle for a $20,000 annual salary. I'm sorry, but I went to school to earn more than that annually. In any case, my brother is being really cool about the whole thing and he's letting me stay here with him until I can get off my feet. I get my own bathroom and my own bedroom. I haven't had my own bathroom in a while considering I've been sharing one with Mom and Jim for ever so long.
Jim is going to bring down my desk and some more of my stuff this weekend because I couldn't fit it all in the trips I made. I came down last Friday with my grandmother in my mom's van with a load of stuff. I got a new mattress delivered on Saturday. The new bed totally kicks ass. I went back to Charleston on Sunday and drove back down here to South Carolina on Tuesday. Bleh! That's a lot of driving!
Anyway, my brother's dog enjoys dragging miscellaneous junk under the bed, so when we removed the old one, there was a pile of shredded trash under the bed. We were cleaning it up when my brother informed me that his sweeper was broken. So what do you use when you don't have a sweeper? A landscaping rake.
